Throup Road: What happens next

Throup Road has been a hot topic at the door. We've heard strong opinions both for and against it. We've also heard something just as clearly: people are worried about taxes.

We all agree Sooke needs better internal road connections. But whether Throup costs $50 million for the whole project or $15 million for a section of temporary road, the question is the same: how do we pay for it?

Sooke applied for nearly $29 million in grants for this project. So far, $0 has been confirmed. Without substantial outside funding, Sooke can't afford this project without borrowing or raising taxes.

If significant grant funding becomes available, let's have that conversation. And if taxpayers are being asked to borrow millions, they need to decide for themselves through a borrowing referendum.

In the meantime, let's keep pushing the Province for the turning-lane improvements along Sooke Road from the bridge toward Charters Road.

Throup Road. Know the cost. Know how we'll pay for it. Then let Sooke decide.

On Oct. 17, vote Sooke Together: Helen Ritts, Steve Sorensen, Susan Belford and Brian McHattie for Council.
