Better parks close to home

Not every park needs to be a destination. A small park or green space close to home can make a neighbourhood a better place to live – somewhere for kids to play, neighbours to meet, walk the dog, or simply spend some time outside.

But not every Sooke neighbourhood has the same access to parks and amenities. We want to identify the gaps and look at how the public green spaces we already have could better serve the people who live around them.

And the answer won't be the same everywhere. One neighbourhood might benefit from a community garden or natural area. Another might need a shade tree, a bike rack, a dog-friendly space, or simple play features for different ages. Sometimes even a couple of chairs in a shady spot can make a green space a whole lot more inviting.

As new neighbourhoods are built, development should also contribute appropriately to the parks and green spaces those communities will need.

Great neighbourhoods need great little parks.

On October 17, vote Sooke Together: Susan Belford, Brian McHattie, Helen Ritts, and Steve Sorensen for Council.
