Why good planning matters

Take care when building on steep slopes. Protect streams, riparian areas, environmentally sensitive lands, and our marine foreshore. Set clear expectations for Town Centre design.

These aren't radical ideas. They're normal tools communities use to manage development and protect what makes their town special.

Good planning provides clear rules for everyone – residents, developers, and Council.

A one-year review of Sooke's new Community Plan is already scheduled for December 2026, and staff have been identifying minor changes they believe would improve how it works. That's how planning should evolve – review what's working, listen to concerns, and make changes where evidence supports them.

And let's be clear. Fewer rules can make development easier. But is making development easier always in Sooke's best interest? What about protecting our streams, forests, shorelines, and the character of our town?

Community planning takes years of work and public participation. We can't keep starting over every time a new Council is elected or someone disagrees with the outcome. That creates uncertainty for residents, businesses, and developers alike.

Improve the rules where needed. But don't lose sight of why we put them in place.
