Could Commuter Rail Finally Be Coming to the West Shore?
Thanks everyone for one of our best Facebook conversations yet on our transit post last week. Clearly, Sooke wants to talk about transportation. We wanted to share some information about a possible new transportation project that might have sounded like pie in the sky until recently: commuter rail between the West Shore and Victoria. Today, it’s a real possibility being actively studied.
The Reconciliation Corridor Initiative is exploring the feasibility of passenger rail service on the existing rail corridor between Langford and VicWest. The project is led by Kosapsum (Esquimalt) Nation, with Songhees Nation, the CRD, five local governments and the Island Corridor Foundation. This is an amazing partnership we haven’t seen before on regional transportation issues. And here’s another good part of this story: the CRD has already allocated up to $1.7 million toward the project’s feasibility study. This money was put aside more than a decade ago for capital improvements to rail.
For Sooke, imagine taking a bus or driving to Langford, then jumping on a train that takes you to Victoria, instead of getting stuck in Highway 1 traffic. Because here’s the bigger point: traffic is a regional issue. People cross municipal boundaries every day for work, school, appointments and services. Transportation solutions need a regional lens.
There’s a long way to go on commuter rail. But there’s a partnership, funding, and technical work underway. Better local transit. Regional RapidBus. Commuter rail. These are generational transportation investments that could change how our whole region moves.
